Give your workspace setup an upgraded look with the Grovemade Walnut Desk Collection.
An ever more popular trend for the past year is the workspace accessories market that targets designers and creatives alike. As we all know your desk is a reflection of your personality so for those of you out there that love matching pieces that set a certain visual aesthetic look no further than the Grovemade Walnut Desk Collection.
Grovemade is serious about quality desk accessories that make your setup have that instant cool look. Mixing recyclable materials like wood, cork, natural rubber, and leather, they create beautiful pieces that complement your devices perfectly. They design, manufacture, and hand-finish all their products in Portland Oregon, with help from other US based suppliers so you know they’re built to last.
Started back in 2009, their vision is to “make cool stuff and have fun doing it”. So that’s how they grew to have a global reach and a big team of 20 hard-working people that share the same drive and passion. Self-funded and run, they owe their success to the close relationship between departments. Their marketing, photography, writing, and customer service are all done mere feet away from their woodshop.
Thanks to the great team at Gromevade, we got our hands on five pieces from their Walnut Desk Collection. These include a Laptop Stand, Keyboard Tray, Wrist Pad, Mouse Pad and a cute little Pen Cup. In this review, we will look at all the individual pieces checking the build quality, the wood, the fit and finish as well as how well they work together on our desk.
Grovemade have perfected their design aesthetic with this Desk Collection and since we have five items there’s a lot to talk about. When laying all the pieces next to each other, there is a sense of visual unity throughout the collection. Sure the grain and stain of the wood differ from piece to piece but that’s what makes it special. The only piece that is made from laminated strips of wood is the laptop stand which is understandable since it needs to be rigid and lightweight at the same time.
All the pieces look contemporary and understated managing to blend well in any modern space. Taking a closer look reveals the attention to detail on all these essential products. All the edges are clean and precise thanks to great woodworking skills. On the bottom of every piece, there is a laser cut cork layer that protects your desk from scratches and offers grip so they stay put.
The Laptop Stand has a simple American black walnut base design with a leather lined steel stop that can hold up to a 15″ laptop at a comfortable viewing angle. For the Keyboard Tray, they used an Oregon Claro walnut with aluminum reinforcement and a natural cork base that looks great with the keyboard inserted. Complementing it is the Keyboard Wrist Pad that features the same walnut with premium vegetable tanned leather and natural rubber for a softer feel and aluminum reinforcement covered by a natural cork base.
Moving on to the Mouse Pad we see a different approach with the layers, this time combining premium vegetable tanned leather with a natural cork lining for the mouse area and over to the side, we see a walnut pen holder sandwiched between the two layers. A nice detail that helps you be more organized with your stationary by keeping your favorite writing instrument in reach at all times.
Last but not least something that every creative person needs on his desk is a Pen Cup to store all the tiny bits and bobs you have in one place. Made from a solid piece of Oregon Claro walnut with an aluminum lined interior and natural cork base for protection from scratches.
When designing beautiful products that look so good on their own their packaging should be minimal and help the product stand out. This is the case with the Grovemade Walnut Desk Collection that features paper wrapping finished off with a sticker seal. Similar to brown packing paper this type of packaging reinforces the handmade aspect of these products. All the products are individually wrapped and sealed ensuring protection during shipping.
Spending some time with these products is the only way we can give a real world review about them. As soon as we heard they are making their way to our offices we cleared our desks in anticipation. The whole unboxing went smooth as all the products were easy to open thanks to the sticker seal.
We got our 15″ Macbook Pro with Touch Bar along with the Apple Magic Mouse and Keyboard to create our setup. The Walnut Laptop Stand holds the new MacBook Pro securely and thanks to the leather lining you can have some piece of mind it won’t get scratched in the steel stop. Inserting the Magic Keyboard in the case is kinda of a tight fit because of the precision cut in the wood. Initially, as you can see in the video, we didn’t have a Magic Keyboard 2 to test out and we used the old Magic Keyboard. Having a different size this wasn’t a good fit for the case, but when clamping the Magic Keyboard in the case you can clearly see how the case was perfectly built around it. Adding the Wrist Pad completes the writing part of this beautiful looking desk setup.
The leather Mouse Pad is large enough to accommodate any mouse and you can rest assure you won’t be running out of movement space on it. Including a pen holder to the side of it is a great idea as you can keep your favorite pen close by. And because you have more than one favorite pen, you need the Pen Cup to store the rest of them on your desk.
When you have all of Walnut Desk Collection products laid out it creates a premium look that every desk deserves. The finish of the wood is rich and brings out the grain of the wood as well as the attention to details. Every joint is precision cut and glued to perfection which really sets these products apart.
Using premium materials with a premium finish is what makes Grovemade a successful global brand. Combining aluminum with premium hardwood and vegetable tanned leather to combine beautiful hand finished products that are built to last. All products are unique in their own way and will acquire a patina over time according to how much you use them.
A design detail we would’ve loved to see on the laptop stand is some sort of storage or shelf in the back for cables adapter and external drives. If you want to take the keyboard out of the tray you’re going to need two hands as it sits snug inside it. Overall this is a permanent setup that sits on your desk without the ability to grab the peripherals and go.
We loved the Grovemade Walnut Desk Collection and recommend it to all the designers, creatives and makers out there that love to have beautiful pieces that complement their devices. If you would like to see the rest of the collection and learn more about Grovemade head on over to their website.
