Out of the whole set of accessories, the Cinema Series Filters look the best thanks to their aircraft aluminum frame. Using the best glass and coating available for the lens that reduces the camera’s shutter speed, removes glare, and increases color saturation. Second best-looking product is the LED Strips constructed from white lightweight plastic which helps you determine the orientation or the drone using red light for the rear and white light for the front.
As for the Lens Cover, the Gimbal Guard and the Landing Gear they are all designed with practicality in mind, serving their purpose right. Constructed out of black glass filled nylon, they are all lightweight enough to not overload the drones flight weight. Using some clever clips to attach them to the drone means you can clip them on and off easily with one hand.
Starting with the ND Filters you get three rotatable ND4/PL, ND8/PL, and ND16/PL filters for reducing the camera’s shutter speed, removing glare, and increasing color saturation. Featherlight construction utilizes a precision threaded aircraft aluminum frame for smooth gimbal operation.
The ND4/PL Filter (5.67g) reduces the camera’s shutter speed by 2 f-stops and polarizes light. Recommended when filming at dusk or dawn, or on cloudy days. Reducing the camera’s shutter speed by 3 f-stops, the ND8/PL(5.6g) is the perfect filter for partly cloudy days. The polarizing aspect of this filter reduces glare and increases color saturation. And last but not least the go to filter when it is sunny out, the ND16/PL(5.6g) reduces shutter speed by 4 f-stops and polarizes the scene for capturing vivid colors. Using an ND filter on these drones is really important in order to retain a more natural shutter speed in reference to your footage FPS.
Moving on to the two LED light strips that easily clip on the legs of the drone allowing you to better see the orientation of the drone in low light conditions at low altitude. Both strips have seven dual-function LEDs that can flash or have a constant light. The white light is bright enough to illuminate a subject in front of the drone. With a 2-hour constant run time or 3 hours flashing run time, you are sure to get at least 2 or 3 long flight with them.
When Designing the Lens Cover, Polar Pro wanted to make it easier to mount and unmount with one hand. So they made an easy solution that allows you to protect the lens with the ND filter mounted on. The same easy mounting method is used for the Landing Gear which widens the stance making the drone more stable. For more protection, you can also mount the Gimbal Guard that protects it from sticks or sharp rock that you may land on. This also means you can’t film straight down and it requires some adjusting as to not interfere with the elevation sensors.
The great team at Polar Pro were quick to send us the Phantom 4 accessories for a full review and as soon as we got them we did the unboxing. All products are neatly packaged in their own box printed with high-quality graphics explaining what each contains. Included with the filters we found a pouch for each lens, used to safely carry each lens individually.
After unboxing all the items we started to mount them on the Phantom 4 drone. The filters are the trickiest to setup as the precision threads need to screw perfectly to not damage the lens body. The other items clip on easily in place thanks to the great design. With all the accessories on the drone, it kinda looks overloaded. But rest assured you can fly the drone with all these accessories on it thanks to the lightweight materials used.
Testing the lenses was the first thing we wanted to do, so we headed to the mountains to catch some amazing aerials. The filters work beautifully by increasing contrast and making images look smoother and overall better than the standard lens. Having the ability to switch them depending on the lighting condition is a major plus and really takes some work out of the final edit so they are a must for any serious videographer. Another improvement is the Lens Cover which is far easier to mount with one hand than the one you get with the drone.
Then for safer landings, you have to get the Landing Gear which really improves the landings of the drone. A thing to keep in mind is that they can appear in the footage on the sides depending on the angle of the camera. We’ve experienced this in our footage and must say this is really a frustrating thing.
As you know, when starting the motors of the Phantom 4, you need to hold both sticks in such a manner that it may actually cause your drone to flip or do things you don’t want it to do. The Landing Gear will help keep the drone steady and stuck to the ground, taking out any of these crashes from ever happening.
As for the LED lights ($49.99), we saw that they work great but we did not end up using them as much. They are heavier than all the other accessories and the added value is small. They won’t cause your drone to crash because of the weight so that is nothing you should be worried about.
So out of all the items we tested, we really recommend you get the Cinema Series Filter – Vivid Collection ($99) as they offer you the best image and save you some editing time in the end. We have to put on the list the Lens Cover ($19) and the Landing Gear ($19) because of the added protection you get. What we would love to see is all the items for the Phantom 4 in a white color to match the drone and possibly a better design for the Landing Gear so they won’t be visible in any of the footage while using them.
Overall we are impressed with the quality of the Polar Pro accessories and how they improve your experience with the Phantom 4 drone. They are a must have if you own a DJI Drone as they will help you get better shots and also help protect your expensive drone with simple solutions. So jump in the Giveaway for you or for a friend and you can win this set worth $210!
